Robert (Bobby) Cox, Jr., PhD
Robert Cox Jr. (he/him), or Bobby as he prefers, is a Licensed Counseling Psychologist. As a counseling psychologist, Bobby applies a multicultural and psychodynamic approach to therapy, which means that he situates individuals within a social context, considers social identities and their relative privilege and stigma, and prioritizes insight, self-awareness, and interpersonal effectiveness as therapeutic agents of change. In addition to multicultural and psychodynamic training, Bobby has received extensive training in treating complex trauma, working with immigrants and refugees, and applying cognitive behavioral approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior therapy, Dialectical Behavioral therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing. He has particular expertise working with racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, and those with multiple stigmatized identities. In addition to his work providing psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples, Bobby provides clinical supervision to mental health trainees and maintains an active research program that has led to multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals in psychology, such as The Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, and Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. He also serves as an executive functioning specialist and supervisor for Organizational Tutors, a network of learning specialists who help students of all ages with executive functioning difficulties and complex learning profiles. Whether he is working with a child or supervising a clinical trainee, he harnesses the therapeutic relationship in the service of growth and change.
Bobby completed a PhD in Counseling Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also completed MPhil and MA degrees in Counseling and Clinical Psychology in Education. He additionally holds dual bachelor’s degrees in English Literature and Hispanic Linguistics from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Prior to his career as a psychologist, he taught children in grades PK-2 in his hometown of New Orleans, and his experience as an educator directly informs his clinical work. He has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings throughout NYC, such as Harlem Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, the Manhattan VA, and Montefiore Medical Center. Varied training in theoretical approaches and diverse contexts allows Bobby to create individualized treatment plans for clients with whom he works, and his identity as a scientist practitioner assures that he uses current research to inform his approach with each of his clients. Bobby is passionate about supporting individuals, couples, and families as they seek to actualize their potential and maximize the joy they experience in life. He is fully proficient in providing psychotherapy in English and in Spanish.
